Epoxy Garage Floor Resurfacing – The Green Choice

Everyone is now concerned with the environment, which is not without cause as the industrial development and urban expansion had tremendous negative effects on the environment. One of the greenest and the environmentally friendly coating types is epoxy concrete resurfacing. Resin, which comes from coniferous plants and trees is valued for its ability to produce and synthesize products like adhesives, varnish, perfumes and most important of them all, epoxy.

The epoxy resin is produced through a polymerization process. In this process, the organic epoxy resin is mixed with a filler, pigments and catalyzing agents in order to turn the mix into a powder. This powder is then heated until it melts. Once it melts, it triggers a chemical reaction that enables the formation of cross linked polymers. When these polymers are dried and cured, they form an epoxy coating that can have UV resistance, high durability and can protect the surface from interaction with steel.

FBE (Fusion-Bonded Epoxy) Coating

Fusion bonded epoxy coating is a process in which corrosion protective epoxy is applied to steel pipes, valves and reinforcement bars. In this process, the epoxy powder is melted at a temperature that varies between 180 and 250 °C, which transforms the powder into a solution that would flow and easily adhere to the steel surface of the pipes and the valves.  When the solution dries, it is then cross-linked to the steel surface permanently which effectively protects the surface of the steel for really long periods of time.

This type of epoxy is used mainly in industries and factories that require fittings and steel pipes that are immune against corrosive materials. In addition, since the epoxy coating has an organic origin and it is made out of environmentally friendly materials, the structures that use this kind of coating do not have any substances or solvents that represent hazards to the environment.

The FBE Coating Process

Unlike simple garage floor epoxy, in order to prepare the steel pipes and surfaces for this process, they have to be blast cleaned in order to remove any scales or rust as well as any other forms of contaminations on the surface. After these surfaces are blast cleaned, they are then heated and sprayed with the dry epoxy powder. This powder is usually ejected from nozzles that are imparted by electrical charges. This powder will melt and will start to flow on the heated surface of the steel and will start to anchor itself on the deformations and the ribs on the surface.

Of course, such process is very complicated and requires certain tools and a lot of experience and skill. This is why it is best for companies, manufacturing plants and any other industrial facilities to hire professional steel and concrete resurfacing firms. This is because these firms can do anything when it comes to epoxy coating. This includes simple garage floor coverings as well as fusion-bonded epoxy coating on steel surfaces, in a proper and a professional way that will guarantee its effectiveness and longevity.
