The Percentage of Solid of Epoxy Coatings
Epoxy garage floor coverings are not all the same, there is many different types and like everything in life, you might not always get what you need or what you think you are getting. This is why it is important to know the different between the different epoxy floors if you want your floor to have all of the good features. The thing that makes all of the difference is the solid percentage in the epoxy flooring.
What is the Percentage of Solid?
All epoxy starts in the liquid form, this is how they are implemented on the concrete floors, but that is not what we mean by solid percentage. The term solid percentage is used to describe the amount of the chemical compound that will turn into solids in the end. The more solid percentage, the better the floors and the more resistant and powerful they become.
Finding the percentage of solids might be a little hard, especially if the product does not have a high solid percentage. This is because most manufacturers tend to ignore mentioning any aspects of their product that it does not excel in. So even if you read all of the product information, you might not be able to find the solid percentage.
Do you really need an epoxy paint that is one-hundred percent solid?
On a regular day, you will not, but whenever the epoxy garage floor coverings are exposed to abuse or heavy duty work, you will need that extra solid percentage. For example, if you drag a heavy piece of machinery or drop your heavy tools on the shiny epoxy garage floor, if it has a high percentage of solids, it will take the hit and not be damaged. On the other hand, if it has a low percentage, the damage will start to show. This is why if epoxy is used as garage floor coverings or at industrial plants, a high solid percentage is an absolute must. On the other hand, if you are going to use epoxy for places that do not witness heavy duty traffic like indoor residential areas, then using 100% solid epoxy is not that important.
Why are not all epoxy garage floor coverings 100% Solid?
The main reason is the profit margin. Companies try to offer the least expensive product on the market so they can sell as much as they can, and to do that, they have to cut down on the costs by decreasing the solid percentage of their epoxy products. So if you want to buy good quality epoxy coating materials that have high percentage of solids, you have to buy them from well reputed companies who do not cheat their customers.
If you don’t know where to get that, you can always count on the service provider that is going to apply the epoxy, you can task him with buying the materials as well as applying them.

Really Pleased! Our garage needed some major help – not only was it a mess but the floor was just ugly with all the stains and such. I will agree with the reviewer below – do not go with the cheap imitators! Floorguard not only has a great product, but their installers and service is well worth any extra cost, which is minimal anyway. Our neighbors have commented on how good our garage looks and we’ve recommended them to Floorguard without hesitation.

Covering our old, gray garage floor was a great aesthetic and functional improvement. This project requires 2 days: first day preparing the surface (major job requiring right equipment), putting down first coating and sprinkling the flakes. This requires about 4 hours. After this dries, they come back next day and apply the topcoat. They notified us when they would start the work and arrived as promised. They worked diligently, completed the work efficiently, left the work areas and our driveway clean. The owner Steve is a great guy to deal with.

It was a pleasure dealing with the company’s owner Steve Chaloult. When we called him to give us an estimate, he arranged to come within a few days. We have a very large two car garage. His estimate was a bit more than the first company we called but he seemed very well prepared in showing us samples and very knowledgeable about his product and we just liked him. For personal reasons , we had to delay installation for about a month and he could not be more accommodating. we finally we able to have it done this past week and it was worth the wait. The garage floor is just beautiful and I never would have thought I would say that about a garage floor! We also had the lower walls around the floor done and very glad we did. At one time we were thinking we could do this ourselves using a kit. WHAT were we thinking? This is a job for a professional and we are so glad we used Steve.

The owner Steve Chaloult was easy to work with and he’s very good at what he does. I highly recommend Floorguard as your contractor if you’re wanting to have a garage floor finished with a durable epoxy like colored finish. Floorguard came when they said they would and cleaned up after they were finished. Floorguard also installs garage storage cabinets.
